I would say L. They are pretty much on par, though. You can give Light points for "winning", I guess.

I'd say Light is smarter, though makes more mistakes. If L couldn't catch Light with the whole police force at his beck and call to install cameras in Lights room and tail him, I can't say he's smarter

Part 2 Light though is probably dumber than an AIDS infected 14 year old bitch

Light Yagami is smarter imo. He grew too overconfident after L died however.

Well Light had all the help from a freaking magical notebook and from the Shinigami. L was initially at a huge disadvantage from not knowing anything about these things and the policians were pretty much dumb (right, Matsuda).

I don't know why people thinks Light was dumb after L's death. He'd win against Near wasn't for Mellos's interference.

Because he tends to keep making the same mistake over and over, not to mention his defeat could've been avoided by simply bringing a spare piece of the Death Note to write their enemies names in

After rereading it, I conclude they are pretty much on par with each other, but L is slightly better imo, based on two instances:

Light said to Misa make a tape saying that she opted to not meet Kira and decided to follow the police's advice, only to make L thinks that the two Kiras didn't meet, which was quickly realized by L. See Light's shock.

L also had to persuade Rem in order for her to kill L, due to how menaced he felt about being caught up by L and even put up a hypothetical situation where him and Misa were caught, which leads me to believe that'd be the case if Rem hadn't killed L.

I think L is better too. L is disadvantaged in that he had to walk into this case knowing absolutely nothing. Light had the upper hand given that he was pulling the strings from the start, and even had access to police information.

I wouldn't say Light was at an advantage compared to L considering he could pull crazy shit like sick a double of himself as bait out the getgo and narrowed Light's location down to the province he was in within minutes of confronting him on TV. Light after losing his memories literally said that if he was Kira and had L's power and influence, he'd be invincible. I agree Light fucked up more, but he's shown greater precog and ingenuity than L imo, and with only occasional assistance from Ryuk and Misa not really being of help until the end. Part of the reason he was written so much dumber in Part 2 was that it'd be too hard to defeat a Light with L's position if he played it smart.

Fair points, but using the double was still a smart tactic on L's behalf, and Light's mistake to bite on it.

Yeah, I wouldn't argue against Light being more hotheaded and prone to making mistakes, but L's had access to the FBI and the ability to put cameras in his room and conduct surveilance on Misa and whatnot without Light even knowing, as well as several banks' worth of money and connections to world leaders. Light managing to trap him into an unwinnable position after being almost beaten shows greater intellect, imo. Even Rem somewhat acknowledges this when she says Light is unbelievable after previously thinking the two were equal.

Saying L was in advantage over Light Yagami is preposterous imo. Light had the Notebook and knowledge of all its rules, unlike Ryuzaki who only gained knowledge of it after Higuchi's death. Light Yagami also had the help of a fricking Shinigami (Rem), who wanted at all costs to save Misa's life and even bribed Ryuk to wrote fake rules in the Death Note that'd presumably end all suspicions they had against Misa and Light, which only happened with the dickheads, idiots of the team investigation, but didn't really happen with L, who still was able to surprise Light with his questions and deductions and aggravated Rem's obligation to kill L, otherwise they'd not be totally saved.

It's clear to me Light had the advantage.

Is near pretty much L/Ryuzaki's imitation?

L constanly used this "7%" to describe Light's chance of being Kira. It seems pretty idiot and makes Near like an imitation of the real L.

I'm almost finishing the manga, chapter 83. I'm really thinking Near is smarter than the original L.
