What made Krillin so important in Toriyama? Krillin is the most featured human in DB. Krillin played important roles in Freiza and Cell. Krillin is even the most featured male human in Buy. Even in GT Krillin was a major plot point in 17 saga. Since then Krillin is always the most featured Human (male).

What does Krillin have that others don't?

I think Toriyama just likes Kuririn. He feels a lot more human in his response to danger than most characters.

Being Goku's best friend probably helped a lot too.

Maybe keeping Kuririn the only human alive in the Saiyan saga (which led to his relevence in the Freeza saga) wasn't intentional though. Toriyama says himself he doesn't plan ahead of time, maybe it was just as likely for Yamcha or Tien to survive if Toriyama felt like it.

I agree. Krillin was Goku's training partner and best friend. That and he brings a "normal" perspective on all the crazy stuff that happens. Whereas Yamcha is very confident (before he becomes a civilian) and Tien is very stoic.
