He was always on the wrong side (or receiving end) of all the jokes and wasn't really to be taken completely serious until the 23rd Tenkaichi-Budokai (or maybe 22nd Tenkaichi-Budokai at best, I don't think I think so).

@Void that's all I could think of. Please forgive me.

The fact that he was bitch slapped by Raditz, one shotted by saiyan saga vegeta, cell and god knows who else speaks for itself. And the fact we have Krillin owned count pretty much confirms that this guy is a bit of acomic relief. Of course, he has also been useful many times throughout the franchise

He's more useful than Yamcha. He also crushed No.18's shutdown controller and is just as responsible for Cell's perfection as Vegeta.

Pretty sure the topic's only referring to Part 1 Kuririn.

Leaving aside that most characters were far more comical at this point due to Toriyama's style, I wouldn't say calling him a "joke" is really accurate considering his role as an underdog with confidence issues were core traits of his character rather than the plot shafting him. He was also the only fighter in the main cast to constantly use inventive tactics in his battles, so most of his defeats were still far more honourable than someone such as jabroni Chaozu. He was definitely taken seriously in the 22nd TB with how he received some praise from Roshi and performed well against Goku, not to mention his death at the end of the arc being treat as the most dramatic moment of the series at that point.

That's why I said maybe until the 22nd Tenkaichi-Budokai.

Kuririn before that was kind-of a joke though. He had humiliating defeats, humiliating moments and more.

So did Yamcha. The guy got stomped by wind. :giraffe

Not all of Kuririn's defeats were there to make him look like a joke. His loss to Jackie Chun was fine with the effort he put forth, even almost beating Chun due to his strategy. His loss to Blue wasn't so humiliating when he managed to make Blue bleed at least and his defeat against Dracula Meng, whilst humiliating, was essential for character growth in order to teach him some humility.

Kuririn's defeat against Jackie Chun was a joke, l0l. The way he just laid there was comical. :cena :cena :cena Yamcha might have lost by the wind, but it wasn't that bad. It wasn't treated as embarassing and Yamcha accepted defeat graciously. He was also the only one to make the connection between Muten Roshi and Jackie Chun.

How was it essential for his character-growth, l0l? Yamcha defeated Invincible Meng with strategy too. Kuririn had a crush on Upa. :cena :cena :cena

He'd become overconfident against his opponent due to how far he got in the Tenkaichi Budokai. Getting bit by Dracula Meng was a wake up call.
