Yeah in the manga the "Chaos" monsters like Black Luster Soldier and MoBC were evolved forms of Gaia and Black Magician respectively, kind of like synchro monsters in 5Dicks. They were changed to Ritual Monsters that could be summoned with any tribute in the real life game and Battle City and onwards because DK summoning mechanics for them were too difficult and only resulted in a less-than 1000-point ATK boost, making equipping a strong spell card like Axe of Despair a less costly way to power up your monsters.
