I don't recall where exactly I am. Not bad so far. Danpei Tange just saved Joe iirc. Plan to read through this twice, the second time more critically.

Great choice. It starts off pretty slow, yet gets a lot better once Rikiishi gets introduced. The only flaws I really found in the series were Joe seeming a bit too overpowered prior to meeting Rikiishi and the kid characters being annoying at times. There were a few other characters who didn't get much development, but they played their role in the story fine.

I'd also recommend checking out the anime after you finish the manga. The original anime has dubious animation quality due to it's age, yet it's soundtrack and voice acting provide a lot of weight along with the writing. The second season of the anime is even better than the manga in some areas such as the art being more refined and a filler episode managing to flesh out Carlos' character a lot more.

Almost at the end of the first volume. No complaints so far.

At chapter 2 page 134. Joe is in the Juve prison with Nishi. So far I'm enjoying the manga. Joe just got his ass kicked by Rikiishi

On volume 4 pg 186. Joe just defeated Aoyama. I saw through Dampei's plan of using Aoyama to further train Joe a while before it was revealed, but I suppose it was a decent plot twist.

Made it to volume 7. I'm hooked. Definitely have to reread it immediately after the first read.

Reached volume 15. Joe vs Carlos Rivera was interesting to say the least. The fact that neither of them got disqualified from the fight was astonishing to me, and I honestly think less of that segment due to how unrealistic it was. The battle was entertaining though. Mendoza just crashed the banquet Kanto TV was hosting for Joe. I imagine this will be the focus of the next arc. I think Joe progressed through the ranked fighters a bit too quickly.

You should definitely watch the Ashita no Joe 2 anime after finishing the manga, then. It improves the Carlos VS Joe fight drastically by not making it a fight where both boxers keep fouling each other.

I think Joe progressed through the ranked fighters a bit too quickly.
It's pretty understandable though. Joe was already at a level capable of going up against Rikiishi who whilst not quite at his peak due to the weight loss, had the same sharpness and vigour to his moves as ever according to Joe with the only thing he lacked being stamina. The same Rikiishi was already top tier in the lightweight class, so it's expected most of the ranked bantamweights would be fodder to him.

Fair enough, I forgot Rikiishi was lightweight from the start.

Joe vs Yong-Bi was a great fight, although I think Joe's resolve boost was a bit over the top when thinking about Rikiishi.

Yeah, I'd say his resolve played a bit too much of a role in the fight, though I wouldn't describe it as being hyperbolic when the rushed conclusion was primarily due to him having come to the realisation of what subconscious reason his body had for willing itself to keep standing. I'd say it's still more excusable than most resolve boosts since it helped to strengthen Joe's character, with the emulation of Rikiishi's weight loss training before the fight making the ties to Rikiishi within it far more poignant.
