Question about Vegeta [Saiyan Arc]

When he fought Goku, he was doing pretty well and able to hold hismself against Goku. But he powered up, I thought they can't supress their power unless they can hold it back at very least.

How come he power up if he can't supress his power?

Maybe they just naturally suppress their power after weakening or powering up. For example, Vegeta powered up to 18,000, then left earth probably in the 100s at best. He probably remained at 100 until the next time he powered up.

And if he didn't weaken then it would probably just naturally occur over time if his power went unused.

So essentially, he can power up, but he cannot suppress his own power.

So how strong is initial Vegeta do you think?

Like 16,750.

It doesn't make a lot of sense considering how impressed Goku was by his power, and how much trouble the others had even sensing him. However, I also consider their ki to be difficult to sense when they are "suppressed". When they are at full power, it makes their ki rise to the surface if that makes sense.

What Nappa and Vegeta had was not "suppressed chi," but "resting chi." They aren't flexing their muscles, but when they do, it's not exactly like they suddenly got stronger, so to speak. They're not just gonna walk around at full power when they're chilling. Meanwhile, someone like Goku can forcefully control his chi however he wants.

I think of it as they have a "relaxed" state and a "high tension" state. They can raise it to max but can't lower it past normal.

The difference between surfacing chi and controlling battle power...

Surfacing chi: Bring out your chi to fight more effectively. Those who can't control their battle power can do it
as well.

Control battle power: Completely erase your chi to hide it from the scouters or give fake chi signals to trick
the foe into believing you have a lower power level.
