Raditz cutting his tail off

The way Goku words it, it almost sounds like some type of special Saiyan method or something. And Raditz seemed pretty surprised that Goku knew about that. Some think Goku's just referring to Raditz blowing it off with a Chi-blast, but it doesn't seem like he's referring to that. Especially when he appears to be powerless once Goku grabs his tail. I always imagined the Saiyans could somehow remove their tail through other means. Like, maybe they could concentrate and make the tail fall off if they were in any danger.

Any ideas?

The way he said it pretty much implies that there's another method of cutting their tails off but does that mean the method can weaken them too the way when someone pull it off?

In Super Gokuden 2, if you select the wrong option, Raditz cuts his tail off to dodge Piccolo's attack. The attack hits Goku instead. Pretty cool game with many alternate outcomes.

It comes off on command when Raditz says "You knew this was coming, bitch niggas."
