Reason why your favorite characters are your favorites

So when it comes to choosing favorite characters from animes/mangas what is usually the major deciding factor for you?

Their appearance, their personality or perhaps just because they did something cool, obviously those aren't the only possible reasons, those are just some examples.

For me it's usually a fair mix of the first two. But I'd be lying if I said most of my favorite characters weren't just based completely on appearance

Feel free to say who some of your favorite characters are and what the reasoning for them being your favorite is.

Primarily the writing placed onto their personality and development, along with the originality of their premise and/or execution. Superficial aspects of their appearance isn't as major a factor as these, but does apply in helping me like a character more if they also look distinctive and cool. Having a perfect blend of style and substance can help out a lot (eg. Guts).

Whilst most of the characters I find my favourites tend to be ones I find the most well constructed, there are a few in my favourites I'd consider to not be quite top tier, as when it comes to favouritism relatability or respect are also major factors. For example, Raoh from Hokuto no Ken is within my top 10 favourites despite him not even being top 20 in terms of the best written I've seen, primarily for how much of a manly badass he was and the impact he made on the series.

Okay, answering to the OP, I'd say that the personality is the deciding factor, although their visuals would be still important to an extent. I don't have a set personality that I really like seeing in a charcter, but considering my favorite ones are Doflamingo and Kuroro I think those who bring in themselves more of a "mysterious vibe" triggers my interest more.
