So its popularity isn't lost on me, especially back in the day. I just never got into it. I've watched the first two episodes recently and thought "this is gay and goofy as shit."

So should I stick with it or is it ass throughout?

It's ass throughout. Very little character development, ridiculous plot armour for the main cast, major asspulls when it comes to winning and the space-time shenanigans of the final arc being quite poor. It's mainly only worth watching for the memes at this point.

If wanting to get into the franchise, just stick with the tcg and maybe watch Toei's "Season 0" anime.

It isn't a bad watch if you watch purely for entertainment and memes, but I far moreso recommend just reading the first 3 volumes of the manga, or as CC said, playing the TCG. The final arc is done far better in the manga as well, but since you have to trudge through about 27 volumes of card games to get there, I don't recommend it.

I also don't recommend the 1998 Toei anime as it's just a watered down version of the first 7 volumes of the manga, with mediocre animation and extremely odd choices in color palette that deviate from the manga as well as just being plain dull in general (whereas DM is at least entertaining outside of the long-winded filler arcs).

Anything beyond Battle City is a waste of time. Episode 1 to the end of Battle City can be pretty damn funny tbh, and mildly entertaining at times. Not something to watch if you're looking for quality.

I found episode 3 to be quite alright but it is lol worthy most of the time. Why does Yugi magically become older in battle? I know it's that puzzle magic and shit but why?

What the fuck? These guys are garbage gay fucks. Don't listen to them, except maybe SSJ2. Watch Duelist Kingdom and Battle City, then see how you feel. Those are the two most coherent and cohesive sagas. Everything after that is either total filler or not nearly as solid in terms of story. You may get some entertainment out of the later sagas, but it feels like the show could have ended with Battle City and been just fine.

this is because they skipped the first ~50 chapters of the manga due to them being covered in the short-lived 27 episode Toei anime. Basically Yugi's puzzle houses an ancient spirit that challenges evildoers to games, only by this point in the manga, they'd narrowed down games to "just Duel Monsters and the occasional side game" for popularity purposes. The DM anime also goes into the identity of Yugi's puzzle spirit later, tho.

I'm quite sure that in the manga Yugi stays the same height with just a more mature and confident look.

Yugi just looks taller because the artstyle changed pretty much. In the early manga even Atem looked like this:

Wouldn't it make more sense if they explained the change as a change in confidence and personality rather than a literal, physical change?

Person A: "hmph! I have placed a super strong card here you cannot possibly defeat!"

Person B: "whaaaaaat?!"

Person A: *celebrates victory prematurely*

Person B: "wahahahahahhh! That was exactly what I wanted you to do! I have this super strong trap card!!!"

Person A: "whaaaaaat?!"
