Chimera Ants is the only good thing in 2011 HxH IMO... everything else is too gay for my tastes...
I think you'd go through a better experience if you watched the 1999 anime until its end, which is the end of Greed Island...
The 2011 anime in the Chimera Ants saga is a masterpiece, I'll give you that... the sagas before it tho.... 1999 Phantom Troupe arc >>>>> 2011 Phantom Troupe arc, whereas characters designs like Kuroro's are ruined as well, much like Killua's, and its obscure nature matches way more the general tone of the Phantom Troupe arc (Genei Ryodan)...
I can't feel the same thing when watching a scene on 2011, really... the Genei Ryodan arc seems so unique to me because of the 1999 version... Pakunoda's death followed by Kuroro remembering the epos unconsciously written by that woman whose name I forgot are just handled and taken to another realm of coolness in the 1999 version... not to mention the tension inherent to the arc in general, which I also can't feel when watching the new anime.
If you are about to drop the 2011 anime due to not liking it, I'd advise for you to try to give a shot to the 1999 one, because... why the heck not? You have nothing to lose, really, and the inlaid obscure atmosphere, differing narrative tone + better matching characters design would give you a different vibe altogether imo.

Did you skip the hunter exams arc?
It's pretty shitty.
You can skip the Zoldyck Family arc while you're at it as well.
It starts getting better at the Heaven Arena arc, at least in my opinion anyway.

Any series that needs time to get good is not worth the time, unless it's setting-up for something really facking good.
