SSJ2 watches Vinland Saga

Planning to start this today.

Good. The anime's only 2 weeks away from finishing, so this would be the perfect time to start to catch up without having to wait for an episode every week.

Ok that's good to hear. I didn't realize it was a 2019 anime. Wasn't able to watch ep 1 yesterday but will today for sure.

Just be aware it has quite a slow start as the first few episodes are spent exploring the characters, setting and ancient Norse lifestyle. If expecting it to be an action packed series, that doesn't really come into play until episode 4 (other than the pretty well done opening scene of episode 1).

In that way, you can somewhat see the Golden Age Berserk comparison. Both have less focus on high amounts of action and more on slower, more personal character moments.

That's fine. As long as the characters prove to be interesting enough I'm ok with that. There doesn't have to be constant action.

So Thors can casually jump 20 meters from one ship to the next?

He seems OP already. The animation is decent enough.

Intro scene was pretty good. I’d like to know why Thors chose to swim away from the battle, but I’m sure that will be revealed later on. It didn’t seem like he was overly happy about slaughtering all of those guys.

The characters' feats are somewhat superhuman. It can easily be assumed that due to its titling as a "Saga", it's open to the hyperbolised events that many of the Nordic Sagas had, much akin to how Rurouni Kenshin's context as a romanticised version of history made the superhuman feats more contextually plausible.

As you assumed, Thors' motivation for desertion will soon be revealed in the next few episodes.

Hm, so Leif was originally from Norway but was forced to escape Harald’s forces. Fair enough. I still would like to know why they chose Iceland as their next home.

As far as both the anime/manga and historical records suggest, Leif's main reason for wanting to establish a colony in Vinland was mainly due to its natural resources such as timber. Vinland Saga also adds in the romanticised passion of wanting to explore the unknown, which may have been a factor.
