I'm starting to think not. Considering he was questioning his placement against a Gohan that he was assuming was weaker than 7 years ago, I'd doubt he'd be able to take down Cell. It would be a good fight though.

Vegeta talked of Cell as not much to speak about. Maturing's realizing that the idea on which Cell was remotely close to Kid Gohan PL-wise was always way off.

Cell did break Gohan's arm with a blast. Generally if you are way weaker than your opponent you can't really do much damage to them.

Gohan said Cell's power went higher than he thought not much afterwards, he simply got overconfident.

He screams DIE!! after firing it. He was clearly stronger (thus the smile), but Gohan put up some real resistance. It’s better than Vegeta getting instantly overwhelmed by Kaioken x4 Goku.

Sure, but it didn’t look like he was trying IIRC until he said he was about to get serious (IIRC) but then he was defeated.

Since he was calling Gohan pathetic, I think so. I'm guessing he thought Gohan's strength was pathetic compared to his own, and not only pathetic compared to Gohan's old level.

He also hoped to win the entire tournament, right (mentioned in this thread already)? So he thought his base had a chance of defeating Gohan and Goku's base forms. Did he know Gohan had been slacking off and had lost power? If Gohan was always going around to his house he could have known. Or if Goten had mentioned being able to hold his own against Gohan, then Vegeta could have guessed that Gohan had become a considerably weaker fighter. But I imagine he would have gone to the tournament thinking there's a chance Gohan has powered up since the Cell Games.

He took a while charging the Kamehameha, talking about how strong he became and how he was going to kill everyone. If Cell rivaled FP Gohan, the only way Gohan wouldn't die instantly would be if Cell made a point to hold back.

I think it looks like he wasn't trying because in the next panel we have Gohan looking like he's shitting the biggest log. That makes Cell look very casual in comparison.

Vegeta saw Gohan at Capsule Corp and said he looked "rusty", but he didn't know how weak Gohan was exactly until the tournament.
