Watching this episode again (English dub) and I'm starting to think Yugi isn't as great as I thought, or Atem was nerfed a bit. Right away it's established that Atem is taken by surprise by Yugi's new deck. Of course, it's always a surprise fighting someone, but it seems Atem expected Yugi to use their old deck. That brings me to wonder how that's possible when Atem pretty much took all the good cards for his deck (the Gods, the Magicians, etc).
Anyway, the advantage seemed to be in Yugi's favor from the start. He knew Atem's strategies for the most part, and most of the cards he'd use; it's most evident in the final move when he rightfully predicts Atem would try to bring back Slifer specifically instead of literally any other monster.
Sorry for this discombobulated mess. It's not as easy doing this shit on my phone.
