The mystery of "Kirahno"'s name.

キラーノ (Kirāno) is his name in katakana. Funimation changed it to "Nareg". Ocean changed it to "Giron". Viz romanized it as "Killerno".

I don't know what any of these names mean lol. All this time, I thought his name was a pun on the Japanese name 煌乃 (Kirano), which I thought meant "shining". But I'm not sure how common that name is and it doesn't really mean "shining", either; キラ (kira) can be onomatopoeia for "shining" or "sparkling" and the kanji 煌 (Kira) means that, but the kanji 乃 (no) just means "from", "whereupon", "you", basically stuff unrelated to "shining".

His name may still be related to "shining" since he's clearly designed to be a "pretty boy", but let's see.

It's because his head is empty. Baka-kirano.

Kilano=key lanyardo - he's named after a lanyard. What do you need for Orange Star High School? An eraser, a sharpener, rice for lunch and a lanyard to get it.

I guess it might be a pun on "killer" since the katakana can translate to "Killerno". Thing is, Keela/Kiela's (racist black stereotype guy at the 25th Budoh-kai, got knocked out by Trunks) name was a pun on "killer" and I dunno if Toriyama was so uncreative that he'd reuse the same source word for two unrelated characters.

After having looked more into it, I'd say, yeah, it's probably a pun on キラ (kira), meaning "shining" or "sparkling". A variant of キラ (kira) is キラーン (kirān), which is similar to the character's name キラーノ (Kirāno).
