Not exactly a mystery; although Toriyama had forgotten about the character when he was asked back in 2004's Dragon Ball Forever guidebook, he could tell that the name was Thai-esque. We can see for ourselves that he's based on a Muay Thai fighter, so it makes sense that his name would be Thai-based. Indeed, there are a lot of Thai names that start with "Pan" and have "Putt", "Poot", "Phut", etc. I'm no expert in Thai, butI'm pretty sure the character gets his name from is ปานพุด, which to my understanding, can be romanized as both "Panphud" and "Panphut". Those are common Thai names from what I've seen. In katakana, the name becomes パンプット (panputto).
Tl;Dr His name is Panphut or Panphud.
