Part of the challenge set by Fearless Instinct.
When I were to say my favourite character in the series, it wouldn't be the man who would regress before progressing at the climax for two arcs (Vegeta) or the one who's character development was done after the Saiyan Arc (Piccolo), but Kuririn, the support character who remained somewhat relevant in the role longer than any other in the series.
To start off, Kuririn was the most interesting character in the series at the time of his debut due to having an actual flaw to his character. The majority of the cast had featured some flaw in the first arc, but it was usually only something very comedic or selfish. Kuririn, on the other hand, had a very relateable flaw in his lack of cofidence, a trait that is being used all the time with protagonists these days yet few do it as well as Kuririn did. He also showed himself to be quite cunning in his debut and throughout his relevancy, such as using panties to catch Jackie Chun off-guard or defeating Chaozu with maths.
Despite often staying in this role of feeling intimidated by other characters in Part 1, it's not as though it's unwarranted. Every time he gains confidence, he is humbled by a defeat. His arrogance in his strength caused him to lose to Dracula Man, whilst his overconfidence against Majunior was proven to be futile. This is returning to the status-quo done right.
In Z, he stands out for being the only human to maintain relevance as Tenshithands and Yamcha are quickly thrown to the side, the former having most of his character traits passed on to Piccolo during the Freeza Arc whilst the latter's desire to get married was passed on to Kuririn. However, it's actually quite an understandable character trait for Kuririn to develop in Z due to it being a matured progression of his initial goal to learn martial arts to pick up girls. Along with this, he continues to play a good support role until the end of the Cell Arc, always doing his part despite the inevitable futility and continuing to generally save his friends, such as saving Gohan from getting his head smashed by Freeza due to his distraction. I guess you could say the Kienzan never making a direct hit would be a point against him, but that's probably more to do with PIS if anything. The only real time Kuririn truly dropped the ball was not destroying #18 but considering his main character motivation, it's understandable (plus nowhere near as dumb as most of the other character decisions going on in that arc). By the end of the arc and the start of the Boo Arc, he's perhaps the only character to have gained some form of catharsis as in his abandoning of the battlefield, his good nature gained him the family life he always desired, allowing his character development to become whole.
So, tl;dr, Kuririn is the best character in Dragon Ball. Thoughts?
