This is a strange quote in the Saiyan arc after Vegeta becomes aware of Goku’s 5,000 battle power. He does say that he suspects it could just be the beginning of his power, but to think that a half dead Piccolo, Gohan, and half dead Krillin would be able to add anything to the fight seems ridiculous. Is this just bad writing? What could those guys do Nappa, let alone Vegeta? They’ve already proven that they can’t do anything more than cosmetic damage to Nappa aside from Krillin’s kienzan.. Thoughts?

Perhaps only for Nappa? There's also the fact that Piccolo keeps telling that Goku will beat them so maybe Vegeta was just curious about it. After all, Goku and Piccolo managed to defeat Raditz despite the gap of their powers. Something like that.

More like a 1,84x one. Gohan's true power was 710, the "1" reading was from a scared Gohan.

Who's to say he stayed at that level throughout the whole fight of his dad and Big Green against The Chaditz though? Even still, that's still going from 1 to 710 nearly instantly, which still reinforces Vegeta's stance.
