Third Hokage/Dumbledore were looked up to and beloved by their respective communities (Konohagakure/Hogwarts). Thought of as the most powerful/knowledgeable in history.

They both had prodigious students who turned-over to the dark side (fully). Voldemort was always evil and Dumbledore always had his suspions about him. It was also implied Orochimaru was sort-of on the path to evil long before, as it was implied that the Third Hokage tried to steer him away from that even when they were teacher/student.

Orochimaru/Voldemort sort of became the boogymengs of Konohagakure/Hogwarts after becoming fully evil.

Snakes

Obsession with immortality to the point of trying to figure-out how to become immortal. Horcruxes/Jutsu Orochimaru was developing (IIRC)

Both were charismatic and were able to gain faithful followers. Orochimaru was even able to make his own village or something and Voldemort had his death-eaters.

When they invaded Konohagakure/Hogwarts (or wizarding world in general) the only person thought to be able to stop them were their former senseis.

Orochimaru/Voldemort killed their senseis.

And then Naruto followed in Harry Potter's footsteps by making the protagonist a generic chosen one who gets power ups from his dead parents. :troll

In all seriousness, I doubt Kishimoto was lifting ideas from Rowling (hopefully not when that'd be one of the biggest mistakes you could do as a writer). A lot of those character combinations are ones standard of the fallen student archetype within manga/anime and story telling in general. Aside from the snake motif (which in itself is a pretty standard depiction of evil in most cultures), most of those traits can also be applied to such villains as Darth Vader from Star Wars, Raoh from Hokuto no Ken, Date Omito from Sakigake!! Otokojuku or more notably than any other example, Satan/Lucifer from Biblical lore (minus the last two points).

Yeah, I guess there are a few of these kind-of stories if all those examples truly do apply. And yeah Snakes was just too obvious but I figured I might as well point that out as well.

I also heard Danzo/Third Hokage relationship is similar to Grindewald/Dumbledore relationship.

Itachi could be Snape. :mikey :mikey :mikey

Kishimoto watched the Harry Potter movies, apparently. Not sure he's a fan, but he has watched them and talked about doing so.

IIRC he said he watched the first movie (I think) after the readers writing him and saying how similar Harry Potter (the character) and Naruto were. Just to see for himself I guess.
