While the style may be cartoonish, and even a put off to some people, I personally think the art style for Ashita no Joe was a stroke of genius. The style manages to soften the grittiness of the series, and compliment any of the Shonen esq scenes. The style also manages to avoid the ugly Chibifcation that most other Shonens deform their style into whenever they move to more comedic elements, quite wonderfully through it's style. But what do you think?

Joe's art style was initially overly cartoonish and not too refined in the manga, though it definitely improves as the series goes on towards the end of the Rikishi Arc and becomes pretty good with it's shading and dramatic single panel shots. Comparing the difference between the art of the original anime and Ashita no Joe 2, whilst a comparison of the improvement in the anime medium in those 10 years, is also a decent testament to the improvement of the manga's own art.

It's unique and different, which are both good.
