I've never played competitively or done much, but I've had a few games a few years ago. The cover art of the cards was always cool. Your thoughts?

I like the artwork on the cards and I used to be a fan of the anime/manga when I was a child, so it does have some nostalgia for me... but I stopped playing it in real life during the Waking the Dragons arc of the original anime. I've still played some games on YGOpro, but I have no interest in learning the more recent summoning mechanics. Everything after 5D's at the latest was just an excuse to milk the real world card game, since the original series at least followed the intended plot of Atem finding the secret to his past despite the shift to card game commercialism.

I appreciate the strategic element of the game and the vast amount of creativity with how many cards are viable, though I've never delved far into it with the amount of rules it has including the constant inclusion of new summon gimmicks (Pendulum, Synchro, etc.) and how you have to constantly keep up with changes tot he ban list for competitive play. By comparison, the Pokemon TCG is far easier to learn the rules of and keep track of which sets are viable for competitive.

It takes a lot of learning and practicing to get into the game on a competitive level, but once you've got the rules down, it'll be easier to focus on the meta. It's not a beginner-friendly game at all, though it sort of started out that way. Now there are far too many rules and summoning gimmicks for someone to learn in just a few duels like the original Yugi/Kaiba starter deck days.
