I think I've brought this before, but it's still an interesting topic to discuss about.
We have a Trunks coming from the future and killing Freeza and his father. It's then revealed by this Trunks later on that he came from 20 years in the future. 3 years later, we also get to know about how much ahead Trunks' future is compared to the main timeline -- but he says he came from 17 years into the future instead. Whilst most people would just assume that such is a case of Akira Toriyama glossing over the time in which future Trunks timeline occurs, what if the future Trunks that came to help the Z fighters later on was a different one compared to the one who killed Mecha Freeza?
In which case, we could conclude that the future Trunks who killed Mecha Freeza was the one who was assassinated by Cell, as Cell's timeline is 3 years further into the future compared to the Trunks who fought in the Cell Games (which coincides to the 3 years gap in 20 and 17). Granted that the future Trunks that appears later on also acts like he has killed Mecha Freeza, but then maybe he killed a Mecha Freeza from an unseen timeline and then ended up in the main timeline for whatever reason?
Plus, following this theory, we could say that the Trunks who arrived in the main timeline had somehow managed to destroy his androids and then was going to advise the Z warriors the way in which he accomplished such.
But yeah, the most common explanation to this is that it was a simple oversight by Toriyama and that the Trunks who fought in the CGs and came to aid the Z warriors was the same who destroyed Freeza and his father.
