Trunks compared to his Androids

How strong is he compared to Future #18 and #17? Sometimes it's implied he wasn't jack to them, others it's implied he can hold his own. So, which one is it?

Not for Trunks, he only had 8 months. Nothing implies he ever fought them either and that kinda contradicts the point of him going to the past as well.

2. 8 months is still plenty of time to makes gains and maybe Zenkais from fighting them. Trunks being thrown together with Goku and Vegeta as the big three even during his return make it apparent he got far stronger regardless of how much time and experience he had.

Nothing implies he ever fought them either and that kinda contradicts the point of him going to the past as well.

His differing descriptions from his first and second trip is enough of a contradiction. Also, even if he could become close to their level, it still wouldn't make time travel redundant. Barely scraping onto the level of one of them isn't going to help when it's 2 V 1.

#17 did say though that they are through playing at the end and that #18 can defeat him (then he destroyed them).

This is a mess. There are two ways to view it...
-Present Androids=Future Androids. Trunks in Androids Saga has the same power as in Mecha Freeza Saga.
-Classic theory (Present>Future and Trunks made huge gains).

How long he stayed in the future is debatable. I think that timelines are paralell, so, for a new timeline not to be created, 3 years must have passed in both timelines and the '8 months' line is bad writing like Cell implying that Trunks killed Freeza/Cold in his future.

8 months is enough for him to get stronger. Also like CC said, the only way for Trunks to tell the difference between his performanced against the Androids was that he fought them twice and came into a 2 conclusion. Fought them first and got destroyed easily and fought them again and managed to hold himself but still got destroyed.

Gains from what? He's training solo. It's implied Zenkais stop happening when a Saiyan becomes a Super Saiyan as well.

If anything that's evidence they didn't get much stronger then. I mean, Vegeta has just achieved Super Saiyan and Goku is doing a training far inferior to the couple last trainings he went through.

The contradictions actually appear after he comes back. First he just says they're strong, but in the Android Arc he flip flops between saying he wasn't shit to them and that they need Goku to saying he could hold his own. Cell says only Kamiccolo can put up any fight against the Androids as well.

Not much. He might've put up a good fight against them in comparison to the Present, but by Trunks' own accord, the difference between them was huge enough to be noted. I think #18 or #17 alone could take him down without much of an issue.
