Trunks During his Debut

Someone on Neo pointed this out, but Trunks doesn't have an aura during most of his confrontation with Freeza and Cold. He has it when initially transforming, loses it when he blasts the ship to bits, doesn't have it when he assaults Freeza until slicing him up and blowing the pieces away, loses it when he first talks to Cold, and regains it when Cold tries to use the sword on him.

What is this about? I've never noticed this before. I always assumed pre-RoSaT Super Saiyans always had auras. I wonder if there are more instances of this. Do you think it really could mean Freeza and Cold were suppressed?

Maybe it means he didn't exert much effort. But, i believe Freeza was suppressed too. If Freeza went all out,
it wouldn't be so easy for Trunks.

Goku doesn't have an aura when he fights Freeza hand to hand near the end of their fight.

This is so weird. It's throwing everything out of whack now.

I'd chalk it up to inconsistent art than anything. I wouldn't play much into it.

Yes, but KP said in the OP that he figured pre RoSaT saiyans always had an aura, which for the most part is true.

Losing the aura would indicate suppression, no? They could not suppress until they mastered the form.

I always assumed that neither of them used full power; I believe Trunks used the same level of power against Freeza as he did Goku (which is why Goku blocking his attacks is significant), and once Freeza made it clear he wasn't going to take the fight seriously, Trunks doesn't give him a second chance.

I think it is possible to use full power without an aura; Goku had no aura against Nappa, Vegeta had no aura against Goku the whole fight, etc. Cold may not have been at 100%, as he went straight from rest to attack, but he should be close, you could compare that situation to Goku's punch against Freeza while he was gathering energy for the Genki-Dama. It is possible to power up without an aura, but perhaps you can't push it to its utmost limits.

They might still be able to reduce their ki output in a sort of natural way a la Nappa and Vegeta, and of course they can still hold back.

Do you know the difference between suppressing and using different portions of your power? The aura can
also indicate the level of effort (ex. Nappa, Scouter Vegeta, Yardrat Goku's finger)

Yes, I'm well aware. It just seems different with an unmastered Super Saiyan. Th only type of "holding back" ki I've ever seen in Super Saiyan is Yardrat Goku's display for Trunks, where it's stated that he was not even using his fighting ki. He still had an aura.
