Another Vegeta's character thread.

Do you guys think that it was consistent on Vegeta's character to get obsessed on Goku rather than ruling the universe with Freeza no longer alive?

Vegeta consistently wanted to be the Super Saiyan for the entirety of the Freeza arc, and he firmly believed a low-class warrior like Galu couldn't even progress past his Ginyu fight level, yet was outdone by him even before he went SSJ. Seems like a perfectly decent reason for a change of motivation. Getting immortality would probably just hurt Vegeta's pride as a super elite as it'd confer him an unfair advantage in a fight, and would feel like cheating.

Even when his desire was immortality, Vegeta presented no goals beyond using it to fight forever and to be free of Freeza. Moreover, his pride in his own strength as the strongest Saiyan and Goku proving him wrong were major aspects of his character and psychology, so Galu proving himself to have done what Vegeta couldn't would and was the catalyst for a consistent change in motivation. He was also generally curious as to what the Super Saiyan was like that would have him wait for Goku's return, with the later revelation there could be more than one of them further changing his goals.

To expand on what Kenshi said, Vegeta was born in a planet in which strength means everything. And being the prince of Saiyans, and stronger than the King since he was a kid, means he believed he was entitled to be the strongest Saiyan there was. Being outpaced by not only someone he considered to be a low class warrior, but also the very same low class warrior who forced him to use Oozaru back then, in getting the very form he has desired in this entire arc, has done a lot to hurt his pride and self-esteem. Add to that another Super Saiyan who comes out of nowhere, and yeah. Someone like Vegeta suddenly feeling the need to prove himself to everyone and set "right" what was set wrong in the pecking order certainly makes sense.

However, there is no excuse for this part of his characterization getting past his "You Are Number One" speech from Boo arc.
