Was the final spirit bomb energy from Earth or from the whole universe?

In the anime, against Buu they say energy will be collected from the entire universe, but then Vegeta goes on about giving energy to the person (Goku) who's saved them all before. Most of the universe wouldn't know what the fuck he's talking about. And why would the rest of the universe not just trust him and put their hands in the air? I'd imagine from the entire universe they could get enough people to trust them to make a decent bomb without the earthlings.

In the manga, only those from Earth, Namek and the Underworld gave energy to the Genki Dama. Only those of Earth were able to hear the message from Vegeta/Goku/Satan due to Kaio transmitting their voices.

It can technically be considered "universal" when it came from sources outside Earth such as New Namek and Otherworld, though Earth was its biggest contributor. It certainly wasn't universal in the sense of collecting Genki from each available source within the universe like the one in GT.

What CC said. Kaio said that it's possible to relay the message to the entire universe, but it was primarily collected from the Earth, with contributions from the Namekians and the Oni in the afterlife.
