Maybe you can even call them dream fights.

I think protagonist vs protagonist is usually an easy one anyway, even-though surprisingly unless they are seemingly two different franchise cross-overs rarely seem to happen, like Yugi vs Judai for example.

I'd say Goku vs Freeza (Goku vs Vegeta too maybe I think) might be one, when he landed on Namek was hype before you knew anything and just watch, because he defeated the Ginyu-Force so easily.

Goku's arrival on Namek is up there for me. At least thinking back to the first time I saw it, I don't remember being much more hyped up than during that moment.

Yeah, for sure. It was kewl how he made Recoome look like nothing, made you really hyped to see him fight Freeza. Build that anticipation.

Naruto vs Sasuke 1 is up there. Basically all of Chuunin exams in Naruto was chock full of anticipation. You had Naruto, Sasuke, Gaara, Rock Lee, Shikamaru all there and hyped up in different ways.

Goku arriving on Namek to fight Burta and Jeice (edit: forgot Recoome lol. Knew there were five, couldn't remember who until I scrolled back up) was one yeh, and then again waiting for him to heal to fight Freeza. For both you were just waiting to see what would happen when Goku tried to fight these guys, plus wondering how bad things would end up getting before he arrives.

Everyone training in the rosat to fight Cell had a lot of anticipation, apart from Piccolo lol. Goku, Vegeta and Trunks the lost I'd say.

Goku vs Vegeta 2, obv. Also Mystic Gohan vs Buu, holy fuck we had to wait forever. Probs felt longer for Gohan though.

I think Goku-Vegeta 2 and the Naruto ones are the ones where the hype came from wanting to see what both/all sides can do, whereas the other examples it was a more about seeing what the protagonist was going to be capable of.

Yeah, Vegeta and Trunks coming-out of the RoSaT when Cell reached his 2nd stage was hype too. You didn't know until the fight began. AT knew how to do that.

Also what about 3rd Hokage vs Orochimaru? Orochimaru punked Kakashi by this point, and 3rd Hokage was like the most powerful known to everyone I think.

Also, when Goku arrived on Namek and owned the Ginyu-Force, Freeza hadn't shown much yet but you definitely wanted to see the fight because you don't know what'd happen with such an at that time invincible-seeming Goku.

Honestly at that point I didn't even want to see them fight Freeza yet lol. I just wanted them to avoid getting killed by him.

I don't remember Sarutobi vs Orichamaru properly, apart from Sarutobi using trees and having a cool bgm song. It's always exciting to see the strongest finally fight though, same for Netero in HunterxHunter, WB in One Piece or even someone like All Might in that other show with a long name I can't be bothered to type but I'm typing all this instead.

I can say Dorohedoro is quite good for building anticipation from both sides too, amongst manga. It uses a dual/triple narrative, with different groups of protagonists who are in conflict with each other all getting the story shown from their perspective and then occasionally clashing, so you're always looking forwards to the next time the characters (who've you've already had a chance to see be kickass in their own ways) cross paths.

Goku vs Freeza for obvious reasons, other worthwhile mentions are Naruto vs. Sasuke at the valley of the end at the end of part 1, Kenshin vs. Shishio and Ichigo vs. Byakuya, Luffy vs. Crocodile etc.

Yeah, these kind-of dream fights you usually want to see because it's the most powerful vs most powerful hype and see what'd happen.

I can't say much about the Rurouni-Kenshin or Bleach one, but why? Also I don't really understand the Naruto vs Sasuke mentions. In what way was it a dream fight at the the time?

Half dead Whitebeard raping the entirety of Marineford was hype in the anime.

Both protagonists but also rivals, very different personalities, one was a natural who was always praised and the other was an understated ninja who had to work extra hard to slowly get recognition. Right from the start of the series you always wondered who would win in a fight. They usually begrudgingly worked together but even then were always competing and came close to fighting often, but the show kept you waiting for it - even in the Chuunin exams it seemed it could finally happen since everyone was fighting, but then Sasuke got kidnapped so we had to wait even longer. Honestly I'm surprised you didn't think it was a dream fight.

I really didn't. I'm not sure, maybe I just don't see it besides Lee out-sped Sasuke easily.

This is an example of how I see when I talk about anticipation and hype:

For example for the first Luffy vs Crocodile fight. Luffy was essentially cruising through the East-Blue without any life-threatening challenge (outside of Arlong but he defeated him too). It'd seem Luffy can defeat any-one, with Luffy things'll work-out. Then Crocodile is introduced as this eerie character and he seems to be well above any-one who's been seen up-to that point in the series. You just think this character is levels above any-one you've seen in power, but what will happen when Luffy faces him? Can he defeat him? After all it always works-out right (even Nami told Vivi that)? Well you got to see.

Similar to Goku and Tao-Pai-Pai in that sense.

I think for Naz vs Sas, both being super motivated for the fight added to it too. Sasuke motivated by trying to get revenge for his whole family being killed or whatever and Naruto being motivated by wanting to bring his friend Sasuke back from the bad side. Add to that the anticipation of wondering how the emotional side of the fight will play out, since Naruto considered Sasuke his best friend and wanted Sasuke to finally allow himself to connect with another person.

Luffy vs Croc crossed my mind, but for me the fight as a whole wasn't as pre-hyped because we just saw Luffy get whooped on twice already. The hype was more about how he'll finally kick Croc's donkey than the general idea of them fighting. I was more excited to see Croc get his comeuppance, not to see the fight.
