What to make of the 'outdo SSJ self' statement.

At some point, at least in Viz, transcending the SSJ state was worded this way: outdo your SSJ self. To me, that sounds like making your base form stronger than the additive SSJ boost.

So, if the additive boost is, say, 150 mil, then the max power an unmastered SSJ can reach is 300 mil. To transcend the state and unlock grade forms, he needs to make his base power higher than 150 mil.

What do you think?

Vegeta reached Grade 2 only 2 months into his training in the RoSaT. There's no way he outdid Namek Goku in base form by then, he was barely stronger than Android arc Goku just 2 months earlier.

I think you're reaching big time. No need to forcefully bring base into this when its probably talking only about ssj, besides ssj being additive is faulty as it is since giving it an "additional" boost would gradually make it a less significant difference from base form as the series progresses and base powers go up and thats implied no where in the series

This entire thread is based on a mistranslation, considering all that's talked about in the original version is "surpassing the Super Saiyan wall" (ie. attaining the grade forms and eventually mastering SSJ). Even if treating it as an accurate reading for discussion's sake, using it as definitive evidence when Galu and co. were working with hypothesises is a major stretch. That's not to say their base selves didn't surpass previous levels of their SSJ power later on (it's very difficult to argue against the cases involving Shin/Yakon and the Kids VS #18), but doing so wasn't a necessity for attaining higher levels of power.

That, and the most Toriyama has bothered adding on the matter is that he originally envisioned SSJ as making a user 10x stronger (ie. multiplicative) before realising Kaioken x20 made that impossible.
