What were the criteria for the invitation to train with Kami?

Was it based on the people that Korin himself deemed worthy?

Probably to assemble the best martial artists in the land. With potential perhaps being a key factor. Either way, I doubt Karin himself had to deem them worthy since he didn't deem any one of them as such, especially not Yajirobe.

^He told Yajirobe outright that he wasn't worthy. Nor any of the other 4 since they weren't trained prior to the 23rd. The Saiyan invasion made him change his mind obviously, but obviously because of the greatness of the impending threat.

Yeah, but he was still impressed with how quickly both him and Goku (along other things) climbed Korin's Tower.

But then again he accepted Chiaotzu and he was never very impressive in terms of physical abilities.

Him being impressed =/= being chosen by him. Kami praised Yamcha but he sure didn't credit him enough to give him any recognition for it until Z.

Sorry but I just don't believe it was based on what Kami believed had the absolute most potential or whatever but more based on who Korin saw with great potential... otherwise he woulda saw inviting Chiaotzu was a bad idea:

I didn't mean that Kami was strictly the one choosing who was worthy to be his disciple and that Korin wasn't. I was just giving an example of someone being complimented (i.e. recognized or whatever), yet not being respected enough to actually be trained. Roshi chose Goku as his disciple after seeing him use the KHH but didn't choose Yamcha in the Budokai despite at least praising his technique a bit, for instance.

Roshi never praised Yamcha.

Also, I think Korin at least saw the others as worthy and only invited Yajirobe as last resort since he knew he had great potential. After all he was basically forced to go the Kami.

He criticized his movements but said he'd done a good amount of training from prior experience. Not that much different than what Kami did when he tooled him.

Anyway, Karin obviously thought those were the best candidates for the job with Goku dead, but he never formally recognized them as worthy to meet Kami until things got desperate in the saiyan arc, was my point. I think I'm done with this debate.
