Which arc first introduced the concept of 'Mental Training'?

This is called image training. As far as I know, it first occurred when Gohan and Krillen are using image training while on their way to Namek.

Image training should be seen as completely legitimate, as in if they were really fighting. There should be no difference.

I think when Goku learned how to count properly, that after 11 there came 12. So the [Roshi training] arc.

The better question is how the hell does it work for two people at once? How can they both project the same subconscious to one another?

Definitely legitimate, though I'd wonder if it were really as good as training in the flesh. It would seemingly always relieve the need to have a training partner which was shown time and again to produce better gains than training alone.

Yeah I think it enhanced their chi overall, but I think chi enhancement is more effective when your body is also being actively worked towards it.

Meditation may also be a way of image training, or then, more appropriately worded, mental training... Not like projecting a fighting, but getting in-tune spiritually, which Piccolo likes to do (at least in the anime it was more shown). Goku was also meditating before the 25th Budokai. Or maybe meditating may be a way to reflect upon one's powers and the effective way to increase it, like making their chi sharper and ready or seeing ways to increase it (Vegeta was kinda meditating, though with open eyes when trying to "see beyond the SSJ", and so was Goku before achieving the grade states in the RoSaT). Here we use meditation to relax and to reflect... There in the series it may be a way to relax while working towards sharpening their chi or reflecting towards a way to break through their limits.

@SSJ2

I think it may be like how telepathy works... Like when they call the others calling into their minds. They kinda project their will into the other person with a strong chi connection, which may materialize as themselves... With the other person doing the same. I think it comes a lot with the way chi works and how there's an interconnectedness between different minds in Dragon Ball... In a way that the perception of chi makes their will way more perceptible, like if they have good or bad intentions, or when Goku knew future Trunks would stop his sword attack... They can project this intense feeling, and if the other fighter reciprocates, they can simulate a fight, I'd guess. It's not stressing physically that much, but moreso mentally, I'd say.

This is a great question. Man, I never thought about the ramifications of this. It's one thing to do it in your own mind, but for two people to be doing it together shouldn't be possible. Sheesh. This is a whole topic in itself.

Yeah, a real life person is better. But in terms of displaying power differences accurately, it's legit.

Like Super Saiyan Goku can really beat Perfect Cell just like suggested in his image training in the manga for BoG Saga.
