Which fight was closer?

I haven't watched the new movie, but from what I heard Freeza was easily beating up on Goku, so which fight was closer?

Goku vs Cell (pre-KHH/Ki loss) or Goku vs Freeza???

Anime wise definitely cell vs Goku they were almost established as equals before the Kamehameha. Though in the manga Goku probably didnt get as much hits, in which I would be tempted to say Goku vs Frieza. He was beating on on Goku but he still scored a knee to the head and multiple kicks and punches to the stomach rather than Goku vs cell in which he only landed like 3 hits post warm up.

I would say SSJG Goku vs Golden Freeza. Goku did fairly well against him, and Whis even said that they would defeat him if they fought together and that usually doesn't work when the gap is sizable.

Golden Freeza vs Goku.

At the end of the day their maximum powers weren't as widely spread out as that of the Cell Games Battle. The fight with Cell was portrayed as more even, but that was more of Cell toying around because he wanted to fight Goku.

Freeza wanted to kill Goku in a way more immediate fashion, but I don’t believe he could have ended it at any time, despite the Freeza's power advantage. He had to best down Goku and by then it was too late.

On the other hand, Cell coukd have ended that any time he wanted.
