When he said about the Future Androids, "When I fought them, I could put up a good fight," was he referring to the time we saw in the TV Special, or another time that took place after he gave the medicine to Goku and returned to his future?

After he gave Goku the medicine. He did not put up a good fight against them in the special.

It's a strange statement in general, as when Trunks returned to the future and killed the Androids, 17 was shocked that he would be foolish enough to even try again. That doesn't sound like he ever put up a good fight.

Gohan was the one, not Trunks.
In the special, it was shown when Trunks fought the Androids alone, and he didn't do bad.

I don't remember him being able to do anything at-all. Outside of if you mean when he tried to help Gohan, but it was shown #18 wasn't taking the fight serious I think. 3 years later he lost, not even a contest. They tanked his blasts.
But before they tanked his blasts, he put up a good fight.

Don't remember at-all, but if they tanked later they weren't trying in the first place which would nullify the point of Trunks' statement (that he could put-up a good fight).

Or maybe it’s because he was worn out and way past his peak. I don’t think fighting fairly well and barely surviving are mutually exclusive. Vegeta put up a pretty good thing vs 18, but only lived because she allowed him to in the end.
