As bad as Bleach quickly became and as overrated as the Soul Society Arc is, the first arc of Bleach at least had elements of trying and occasionally succeeding at being good. As much of a YYH clone as its first arc was, there was some decent exploration of some of the characters and how death impacted them that made it more than a carbon copy, and Soul Society's establishment of the series' most famous element in Shikai and Bankai at least gave it its own identity.
Meanwhile, Fairy Tail was always the most generic kind of Shonen, taking all the overused tropes (nakama power being the most obvious) and being most remembered as just the poor man's One Piece when it came to its character designs and archetypes. Also, at least Bleach didn't make its continuity a joke through time travel (even if making it a joke through numerous plot holes).
Kubo also has the benefit of Bleach being his first break-out commercial success to excuse some of the problems it had. The same can't be said of Mashima, who already did Rave Master and learned nothing from the problems that had with its writing (even if not quite to the same extent as Bleach or Fairy Tail).

Why do you guys subject yourselves to these shitty shonen series? I always see posts from several different members talking about watching all of Bleach and how much it sucked... Why did you watch all of it?!

I read Bleach when I was a lot younger in high school and less aware of the problems with its writing and even then I dropped it by the time of the last arc. Had I tried to get into it maybe 2 or 3 years later than I did, I'd probably have dropped it after the first arc.

Same. I read and enjoyed the first two arcs when I was 14, but even then I dropped it as soon as they went to Hueco Mundo. Any time I read the shitshow afterwards was more or less as a social experiment to see how much of the torture I could take.

Hunter X Hunter is the greatest Shonen of all time, vastly superior to inferior shows such as One , Fairy , and Dragon Ball . Deal with it. 3
