Why did Gotenks have to relearn how to transform?

Both Goten and Trunks were FPSSJs, and yet Gotenks seemingly wasn't able to turn Super Saiyan until after training in the RoSaT. Why might that be?

Maybe a fusion is considered a new person entirely who has to learn everything from scratch.

OK, then maybe fusion-dance only. Elder Kai did say they can/should transform after fusing when Goku thought about transforming first.

Doesn't that seem odd that a fusion dance created by Metamorans would not allow Saiyans to transform, yet potara does?

Potara is a method used by the gods/kais, so natural it’d have its advantages over something created by mortals or so I’d guess in the world of DragonBall.

But Goku expected to be able to transform if he fused with either Gohan or Vegeta. Unless you want to argue that Goku thought Base Gokhan/Gogeta would be stronger than Evil Boo/Gotenks Boo.

No I mean when Goku wanted to use fusion dance. Remember how he was going to fuse with Gohan before Old Kaioshin told him about the potara? Then he suggested fusion to Vegeta later on.

Yeah, that’s what I mean too. Elder gave him the potara and Goku IIRC thought the same rules apply to it, but elder told him to transform after fusing with the potara.

Oh ok. But Goku knew Gohan couldn't transform at that point. I guess you could argue that he wanted to fuse as SSJ2s with Vegeta, but it's assumed that a Gogeta fusion would have access to SSJ3.

Goku does say merging as SSJs is trickier, but doesn't explain why. It's probably got something to do with the boys's own level of mastery over SSJ (Although they seem to have FPSSJ power and are at ease with the form, their Ki control is ass: Goten just learned how to fly and Trunks is tired just from suppressing himself to Goten's level) or the dance itself (Pre Rosat Gotenks seems to be a incomplete fusion since the boys improved it in the Rosat).

Gogeta and Kefla can transform though.

I think Gotenks was just an almost perfect fusion at first and after training at Rosat he perfected it.

Perhaps they hadn't perfected the fusion yet. One more piece of evidence to suggest that it was only in the ROSAT that they created the perfect warrior that would surpass SSJ3 Goku, so the numbers don't have to be as high as most people believe.

Goku said it'd be hard to try fusing as SSJs at first and later asked if he should go SSJ before fusing with the Potaras, seems that was a limit for Dance Fusees until GT and Super retconned it
