Chapter: 476 (DBZ 282), P10.5-8, P11.1-3
Piccolo: “Goku…There’s something I want to ask you while I’ve got the chance…[ ] …That Super Saiyan 3 thing earlier…if you had gone all-out, wouldn’t you have been able to defeat Majin Boo?...How about it, am I wrong?”
Goku: “Nah, I don’t know…When it comes to Majin Boo’s strength, it’s like a lie…I think that I probably couldn’t have won…”
Piccolo: “…Probably? Knowing you, why didn’t you try until the very end?...Does it have to do with that energy…?”
Goku: “No…I’m no longer a human who’s particularly even supposed to be here…I shouldn’t be the one to do it. It’d be better for these young guys to solve things somehow or another…After all, some other outrageous guy might show up eventually, right? …It's a nasty gamble, but…Seeing those two super-gifted squirts, it made me want to take this gamble…

In the japanese anime, with no fillers, Piccolo explains exactly why it is a gamble.

Episode 240 (Chapter 469)
6:34-7:15
Piccolo: "However... It will take quite a bit of time for Trunks and Goten to master this Fusion thing. During that time, a considerable number of people will become casualties of Majin Boo. They might all even be exterminated... no, the whole Earth could possibly be destroyed."
Kuririn: -gulp-
Piccolo: "We'll have to risk it. Whatever happens, we have to be prepared to endure anything until the pee-wees master Fusion."
Goku: "Piccolo, even if they are exterminated, as long as you guys have the Dragonballs, you can return things to normal."
Kuririn: "That's right, huh?"
Goku: "There's still some hope remaining!"

It's obvious from the getgo why that's a gamble but a lot of people like to ignore the context and use it to support SSJ3 Goku >> SSJ Gotenks to suit their biases.

I remember the Pojo debates with Apoc and whoever else that consistently claimed the gamble was ONLY in reference to Gotenks' predetermined power. Good days.

I recall using that argument back in the day, but things have progressed so much since then.

Apoc would twist things so he'd suck his own dick through his ass not to admit that kid buu and goku were weaker than super buu and gotenks.

He still does shit like that. I don't know if you've been on pojo lately but he came back just to make a topic about super vindicating his SSJ gohan in GT argument from a six years ago.

Yea, the gamble consists on them learning the fusion in time.
