Why was Piccolo excited?

When the boys fused in the spirit room, Piccolo is excited about the fusion going perfectly, before seeing
Base Gotenkses power. So, why is he excited? At this moment, he doesn't know they can go SSJ after fusion.

Is excited the correct word? It's more like relief, which turned into excitement because at the very least, they fused correctly.

But, at that point, he believed Base Gotenks was shit compared to Buu. The fusion going perfectly shouldn't
make any difference at his desperation.

For the same reason that Piccolo has a "!" moment when Goku turns SSJ while sick even though his power was miserably low from the disease.

I was under the impression he wouldn't get excited for any less than a miracle. Base Gotenks's power is "miraculous". Whether it's miraculous compared to his previous base form (i.e. it isn't impressive on its own), is a different question. Gotenks and Golan have had their power retconned anway, so I don't see a problem with going wild.

But really, the line only exists to set up a gag.

I guess he was just happy that they hadn't slacked off like they had before. He was happy that they'd perfectly equalized their powers, right? To him, that meant they'd put a lot of work towards mastering fusion.

To me it was more of a "Great atleast he fused properly now lets see how much stronger he is Come on Come on common!!" This somewhat connects with his next comment which was something like " good! He was never this strong before maybe we do have a chance!"

The impression I always got was that Piccolo realized something was wrong when Goku transformed. I mean, it comes down to interpretation, but Piccolo seemed more shocked in a negative way than good to me. I think he was well aware Goku's power wasn't where it should be, but he probably thought he'd win.
