Is this just an inconsistency?
Was it just because Toriyama wanted to show Vegeta in his most pure form, for his moment of defending the Earth and fully befriending Goku? It's in base a saiyan's emotions are most compassionate and in base he's a husband and father. Did he want to circle back around and pay homage to the Vegeta we first were introduced to?
