Why wouldn't South Kaioshin pull out the Z Sword?

I theorize that pulling out the sword wasn't merely a strength feat. As is the case with Excalibur, Gohan was destined to pull it all along.

He was likely either content with his own strength or, like Goku and Vegeta, didn't want to be handed it through cheap methods.
