Have everything go the same up until Goku's revival. Instead of being able to swap lives, I'd have someone of such high position as Elder Kaioshin able to overrule Enma's limit of Goku being able to only visit the living realm one day and grant him an additional half-day to use the Potara (and negate the limit entirely if the permanent fusion was successful). Instead of Gohan missing the Potara like an idiot, Boo would simply destroy it with a small Ki blast as a precaution, but Gotenks' fusion ends, thus giving Gohan the opportunity to kill Boo. As for what happens with Boo absorbing him, there's two routes I'd go with it:

1. Boo attempts to absorb Gohan, only for the part he separated to be destroyed as Gohan isn't foolish enough to fall for the same trick he saw took Gotenks and Piccolo, thus shown him as having fully regained his fighting spirit. He then doesn't take long to destroy Boo other than one small piece that Mr. Satan destroys with a grenade before it can regenerate. We can keep the best character of the Boo Arc getting his glory. Boo's victims are brought back to life with the Dragon Balls and Goku is able to bid everyone a final farewell and fully entrust the Earth's safety in Gohan's hands. With Goku and Vegeta permanently dead, a theme of entrusting the Earth to the next generation is presented with Gohan not ignoring his father's words like before and finding the balance between scholar and fighter. Thus, like in Dragon Ball Online, he writes the book about Ki control "Groundbreaking Science" to bring the Earth into a new age of warriors. The series ends after a 10 year timeskip with Gohan working hard at a lecture regarding Ki before going to train Pan with Goten's (who's hairstyle would still be Goku's) help afterwards.

2. Pretty similar to the 1st except that Boo decides to absorb Goku. Gohan still has a wide power advantage, but is at an overall disadvantage as destroying Boo will mean removing his father from existence entirely. It's only when Mr. Satan shouts that Boo will take not just Gohan's father away, but all he holds dear, does Gohan finally have the resolve to finish the battle. Tearfully, he erases Boo and Goku with a Kamehameha, thus carrying tremendous guilt from having destroyed his father's own soul. In this scenario, his resolve to maintain peace is even stronger. The series ends at a similar point as scenario 1, but with the lecture focused more on the deeds of Son Goku, with Gohan becoming depressed due to remembering his actions when seeing Goten. Nevertheless, they resolve to at least keep the lgacy Goku left behind in existence.

I kinda like your 2nd part way. With Goku being dead and nonexistent and Gohan being guilty about it, it would make his character like Kenshiro where he's filled with sadness and continues to grow stronger and carry Goku's legacy. It should also be the story post Cell Games with Gohan being depressed but instead the opposite way.

I would not be satisfied. But if I were to write it . . .

-I'd do it in a way where Gotenks and Piccolo still get absorbed
-This will give Gohan time to reflect on what he's done, his overconfidence got the best of him again
-Basically, Super Buu will still try to blow up the Earth but Gohan will able to blow it backwards by adding Super Saiyan on top of his Ultimate form
-We'll just say that this makes them equals
-They then have a final beam struggle, cuz it's DBZ
-We'll then say that Gohan can't maintain his Super Saiyan form any longer, too much strain on top of his Ultimate form
-So then he begins to get pushed back and it looks like he's going to lose
-However, Super Buu's fusion time runs our and is normal Super Buu or I guess Buucolo
-But this gives Gohan the chance to push forwards and win the day

But what they did would be a better ending than this.

First of all, I wouldn't have turned Gohan into an uncool looking nerd. I would have rewritten Buu Saga from the beginning. Gohan keeps his long hair, keeps training and is a badass.

I think Kid-Boo wasn't really needed at-all. Just another form for Boo who already had too many forms anyway. You could quite literally have his own race with as many forms as he had shown in the series.

I think Gotenks could have defeated Super-Boo though, in the end he didn't really do anything (that happens a lot in the Boo Saga) and I thought Gotenks defeating Super-Boo could have been decent.
