Oh GX. Meh I think GX overall is decent series. I used to love it as kid, but after watching the 3rd season I began to get bored with it and just dropped it altogether. But after I finished binged watching the last season of 5Ds and the whole series in Japanese I decided to rewatch GX and I began questioning why did I like it? I don't hate it but it has noticeable flaws that I can't ignore that as a whole quantity outweights the good quanity but the good qualities of GX even it out.
Cons
- It was extremely inconsistent for half of the time, full of one shot episodes and derailing from the main plot. For half of the first season it was just 1 or 2 shot episodes and when we actually get a plot but still derail away from it for 1 shot episodes of characters who ultimately won't matter at the end of the season. Season 2 was a little bit more focused but still scatterbrained. Seasons 3 and 4 finally fixed this but at a cost (which I'll get to).
- It was extremely kiddish half of the time. In seasons 3 and 4 it got serious but Jaden's depression in season 3 felt a little boring until he finally got his groove back. In season 4 with his personality change he kind of came off to me as an asshole snubbing his friends at almost every turn, in the tag duel tournament basically telling Alexis "Let me handle this, I'll end this a lot faster than you can" and just OTK his opponents, and interrogating Alexis' brother so horribly that she decides to go across his face.
- The cast barely had any duels or sufficient screen time to develop a character because Jaden was hogging all of the duels and screentime for himself. I've seen people credit this to E-Heroes being popular and selling like hotcakes, Crow's blackwings blew up and he wasn't hogging all of the screentime in 5Ds (although he was promoted to tritagonist seemingly taking what was supposed to be Akiza's spot). The characters aren't really interesting to me, really the only GX characters I liked were: Aster Phoenix, Zane, Jim Cook, O'Brien, Jesse, and Jaden to a small extent.
- The duels either ranged from lackluster to good. GX really had no blow me out of my socks duels like Duel Monsters and 5Ds did. It had a few good ones but this is where con one comes into play. GX when it was a inconsistent mess put out good duels. A lot of my favorite came from the 1st half of the series, but when it finally got some consistency most of the duels were bad (irony isn't it)? It was good seeing Yugi the few hot times we did and it was cool to see him and Jaden clash and while I will say it is the best duel of GX it wasn't a great final duel of the series like: Yugi vs. Yami Yugi (as overrated as it is) or Yusei vs. Jack in the final few episodes of 5Ds. GX had good duels but that's the best it made "Good". Arc-V has broken the good barrier with it's duels.
Pros
- I liked the premise of the 3rd and 4th season (although they had bad duels for the most part and I felt like the 2nd time they went into the alternate dimension dragged on a bit).
- Like I said above I liked: Aster Phoenix, Zane, Jim, Brodie, Jesse, and Jaden to a small extent
- Despite lackluster duels for most of the series some of them were good. Arc-V has put on duels that are more entertaining.
GX had/has issues but overall it's a decent series. 6/10 for me.
