I think Gohan is close to them.Goku is not sure if Gohan can beat Fat buu which means those two could be rivals in power but Gohan losing because of buus regeneration.Fat buu and Ssj3 goku weren't far apart either.Yes,Goku did tank buu's punch to the face but buu was holding back.Still Goku could have killed him if he actually tried.
So can something like this work?

Gohan ssj2 (post z sword)-80
Fat buu-88
Ssj3 goku-100

Kaioshin is pretty hopeful, but Goku and Old Kaioshin write him off pretty quickly. Gohan definitely improved quite a bit, but I think he'd end up being a better match for Skinny Boo than Fat Boo.

Goku was just left wondering if Gohan can actually do it,he didn't "write him off"

Look at the way Goku is wondering, he's not looking very serious about the situation.

"Gohan, you've improved a lot, but you're still not beating (Fat) Boo." Is pretty much what I'm reading from the situation.

He's getting closer to Fat Boo, but he isn't going to win. Old Kaioshin makes this quite clear when he tells them they're all wrong.

Gohan is above Fat Boo by a bit. Boo's regen is why Goku was wondering about it

Logically anyway. It could be that Goku is dumb enough to just be comparing power

lol people complain that Gohan gaining that much strength in one day from swinging a sword is unreasonable, but they're all right with him surpassing Super Boo after sitting down for 20 hours.

Because he has a feats and statements to back it up unlike the Zword training... :kenshi

I don't get it. He got physically stronger. That's what lifting does to you.

Super shows us training gains are just plot based

I see no reason to doubt his closeness to Boo

Nothing in the plot requires to Gohan to get so strong, so that's a poor excuse. Gohan is never really suggested to be close to Boo either. Kaioshin was grasping at straws and Old Kaioshin confirmed that Gohan is weaker.

Old Kaioshin says nothing about Gohan's strength at that moment. When he appears, he simply corrects the group who are saying that the Z Sword's benefits were as a training aid... when in fact, the benefit was him all along.

I agree, Old Kaioshin was the benefit instead of training with the sword. Does that not suggest that the training with the sword was merely overhyped?

Not at all. All it suggests is that their conclusion about the primary benefit of the sword being it's weight and the strength gained from wielding it was incorrect.

The strength gained from lifting and swinging the sword around doesn't change... strength that was enough for Kaioshin to get excited and Goku to question.

If the power was supposed to come from Old Kaioshin all along, then I find it redundant for the sword to give Gohan some huge power-up that puts him close to Fat Boo, especially when the power-up is completely meaningless since Gohan never fights Boo.

Again, Kaioshin was grasping at straws. Goku just seemed hesitant to say that Gohan was weaker.
