Volumes 1 - 16.

Read at your own pace (if u can and want-to plz) according to the Wiki, volume 1 is 11 chapters and volume 2 is 12. I'll probably get them done within a week from starting, and I'll (maybe) start tomorrow. Expect spoilers. :giraffe

Ight I'll start soon. Volume 1-3 is one of the few physical copies of the manga that I own so it'll be nice to go through that again.

Just read up to chapter 4. It's depressing knowing that a story this charming has devolved into the atrocity that we see today.

What is this immortal phoenix that Roshi mentions in chapter 4? It didn't sound as though he was joking around when he brought up immortality.

Considering he later admits there's no such thing as an immortality elixir just before facing Daimao, it was just a lie. That, or it can only negate death by ageing and not resistance to being killed as we see with Roshi (as long as we're not counting Super which gives an alternate explanation for Roshi's lifespan and at best implies he didn't rely on the phoenix for it). The scene is very much set up as ironic comedy regardless with the "immortal" phoenix dying of food poisoning, so it wasn't really a concept Toriyama put more thought into than a gag.
