I'm planning on rereading the series. Anyone else wants to join?

It baffles me why anyone would choose to read the series up until after the Election anymore when both versions of the anime boost the quality of the original vastly, the 1999 with some additional character moments and the 2011 version with superb animation and the Chimera Ant Arc adaption. Reading the manga at this point is like going to a restaurant serving prime steaks and just eating some undercooked fries :alex2

I'd rather read something that hasn't been read 9 times.

Well, reading is faster.

Anime is for boys

Read Dorohedoro. It actually has an ending. If you start now you might finish it before me.

I agree CC that you should just watch either anime, but I would contest that there is no value to the manga. CA arc's narration is objectively definitively-in-my-humble-opinion better in the manga and it is impossible to replicate it or improve it in anime. This goes for most narration-heavy manga. It will never, ever happen. That being said, 2011 didn't even do the best that it could've done in that regard.

I could also point to lots of significant scenes in which the 2011 anime's hokey mood often fails to capture the tense/visceral atmosphere of the manga or just falls a little short (mostly in YN and CA). 1999 anime is usually a little better in that regard but it has its own failings from what I remember. Certainly both anime adaptations are superior overall and for a one-and-done experience, watching 2011 alone suffices to definitively experience HxH, but there is value in examining the source and in this case it is, imo, disingenuous to suggest that the source has no merit in its own right, chicken scratch notwithstanding.

And yeah, reading is faster too I guess. That being said, I don't have the time or desire to read this shit either so I'll pass. I'd also rather just watch the anime again.

Those are some well brought up points. I also agree that the anime fails to capture some vibes from the manga even with the anime being in general a better piece to consume, looking at the broad picture.

My memory of HxH is fading a lot due to many years of not seriously picking it up to read (iirc the last time I actually read many chapters of this was in 2016) and there's arcs like Greed Island to which I remember basically 0 besides the dodgeball sequence, so I'm interested in going more in depth. Also worth noting that I've experienced the Greed Island sequence by the 1999 anime entirely so reading the manga ought to produce a different experience. I'm not too much into RPG games, which I think Togashi clearly inspired the greed island sequence on, but I think venturing myself on these details a little would be a nice brain exercise lel.

For what it's worth, the VIZ scans of HxH also seem to have noticeably improved on some of Togashi's scribbles, like detailing the scene more and such iirc.

The art in the volume release is touched up compared to the magazine release, so it's not a Viz thing per se, but if you're reading the Viz volumes then you'll have the better art.

Sure. I remember Pitou being pretty scribbled and almost unrecognizable in their first appearance in the magazine release. Hope that's improved.

If the time it takes is the main factor you're considering, I'd question whether or not you're invested enough for it to really be worth doing. I'd also argue some parts of the Chimera Ant Arc can take longer to read than watch depending on your reading speed due to the copious pieces of narration littered in the later parts of the arc, and that's minor compared to the current arc's text walls.

Well, 1999 has some filler and the early parts of the Chimera Ant arc are dragged out in the 2011 anime.
