Was it ever stated as to how Senzu beans functioned exactly? What actually happens when the Senzu bean is chewed and swallowed?

It's supposed to make you full for 10 days, but Goku seemed to still want to eat more after ingesting one. The healing properties weren't introduced until the Daimao arc, where it's just infodumped that it heals wounds.
