I don’t know. I liked it when Psycho-Pass is grounded (as grounded goes) in a futuristic setting. BTW, I know you’d most likely h9 the series, but Madoka is quite an interesting series even if for the fact that the series is like a darker version of the type of series.

I'll probably watch Lain once I'm done with all of Psycho-Pass
sel is gr9, but it’s avant-garde to an extent. It will all make sense in the end though. & tho it’s avant-garde it still has an antagonist & things so it’s not completely experimental experimental. i called it non-linear before iirc but that wasn’t the word to describe it.

@Kyo are you here?

Kyouks, do you think the Urobutcher is a poor meng’s Konaka or different enough in-terms of story-telling?

I wouldn't say that he's a poor man's Konaka (that is to say, yes, he's different enough), but I do think he's overall a lesser storyteller in terms of conveying his themes in a natural way. I can see why people would get more attached to his characters and narratives though.

why? because his series are more exciting (or maybe even have more exciting scenarios) to some?

so you don’t see what makes them so similar? they are 2 different ppl tho

Yeah and they're just normiecore enough for people to go ooh aah

Ohhh look it's magical girls but dark, also look at how their wishes create despair
Ohhh look it's Fate, I know Saber, also look at them talk philosophy at each other
Ohhh look it's Minority Report, also look at them quote philosophy at each other

It's exciting for general audiences, and there's also this pretense that it has something more to say underneath (and sometimes it does)

There are some similarities

Well the first one is a sub-version.

I mean futuristic fiction especially years ago (but Psycho-Pass is more modern) has always been exciting to people or so it seems.

does the urobutcher try too hard to make every-thing bleak & dark, where-as konaka whilst dark & messed-up at times left a sense of hope in the end & ended on a good-note (even happy-ending)? that said psycho-pass ended on a hope-full note too with Akane telling Sybyl-System that the fight was on & humengs will keep-on fighting the good fight for the future or some-thing IIRC.

Yeah, they have different names.

Madoka’s got some subversive elements, but “magical girl, but dark/becomes corrupted/etc” isn’t uncommon in the genre either, like in Sailor Moon for example.

I’d have to watch his stuff again (it’s been like 10 years) but I think Urobuchi’s stuff generally ended on a hopeful or positive note, except when he tacks on additional material like Madoka movie 3. Fate/Zero had to end the way it did because it’s a precursor to Fate/stay night, so not really his fault. That being said, I do think he has a tendency to portray dark stuff without always having the substance to back it up. Something like Lain maybe has less general appeal because of its lack of a colorful cast of characters and stuff like that but I think it had so much more to convey than stuff like Fate/Zero or Psycho-Pass. I never watched some of the Urobutcher’s stuff like Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom though. I’ve heard that Saya no Uta is pretty good, I should play it sometime.

But the mascot being evil is. The mascot can never be evil or manipulative in those series.

I’m fairly sure that Saya no Uta was the first time I’ve heard of the Urobutcher. This might have even pre-dated Psycho-Pass or Madoka releasing. That’s one messed-up story.

The reason I think I was talking about his stories being bleak was because he said IIRC that he can’t come-up with any-thing positive because the world is bleak or some-thing like that. Can’t remember exactly, but yeah at the end of Madoka series she did break the necessity or some-thing for the loop of that one character trying to keep saving her & defeats that one evil. It’s been a minute since I watched the series so I don’t remember every-thing.

Been watching Trigun lately. I'm enjoying it better than I did Cowboy Bebop. Vash comes across as a blatant Gokuu knockoff with guns, and I think he would have been better if he wasn't so goofy, but at least the show is a Lupin the Third ripoff like Bebop is. I'll definitely take Meryl and Milly over Faye and Ed, too; they're both pretty annoying and useless, but at least they're not anywhere near as sexualized as Faye, nor are they damsels-in-distress damn near episode like Faye is. Milly is basically retarded, but she's less annoying than Ed at least.

I'll definitely watch this show all the way through. Then, I think I'll watch Big O.
