Why do people think Vegeta had any relevancy?

-Beats another irrelevant side character in Guldo, then gets humiliated and brutally beaten by side character Recoome.

-Defeats Android 19 and saves Goku. The only time he did anything relevant.

-Loses to a teenage girl who just woke up 5 minutes ago. Have you seen how long teenagers take to wake up?

-Beats up Cell, but Goku or Gohan would have come out of the rosat and done the same a couple hours later.

-Goes full emo (probably inspiring hundreds of emo DBZ AMVs) and wastes everyone's time while Goku tries not to hurt his feelings, then goes and kills himself anyway to try to defeat Buu, to no effect.

He beat Gokuu, as well as Kurilin and Yajirobeh. His fight with Gohan was a draw.

Nah, Piccolo would've saved Gokuu and killed Nineteen if Vegeeta wasn't there.

Not only that, but he let Cell become Perfect like an idiot and got his ass kicked.

Valid as well.

After the Saiyan arc, Vegeeta basically just exists to make Gokuu look better, like all other side characters. He just gets to win more fights against lesser opponents than most other side characters do. Dragon Ball is really just the Gokuu Show at the end of the day.

It took all of them to defeat Vegeta when they first encountered him on Earth. He wasn't insignificant, in fact, he was their greatest threat until the arrival of Frieza. It's a bit silly to underscore that battle in that way also considering they also nuked him with a spirit bomb to boot and he was still kicking.

He also almost got the earth wiped out by charging at Super Perfect Cell when enraged. He had some good contributions in the Cell arc.

First, in a narrative context, victories are not the same as relevance. Vegeta doesn't lose to just a couple of humans and a child.

He forces Goku to use the Kaio-ken x4, something that almost kills him.
He provokes the first real cooperation between the characters.
He introduces the concept of the Saiyans as a major threat.

And on Namek:
Saying that Vegeta doesn't progress is directly false.

He kills Dodoria and Zarbon—revealing key information.
He kills Guldo—saving Gohan and Krillin.
He forces Frieza to accelerate his evolution.
Vegeta saves Goku from Android 19 (already mentioned).
"His pride allows Cell to reach perfection."
It’s an intentional narrative choice, not bad writing.
He doesn’t defeat Buu but redefines the character.
It’s the conclusion of his arc in the Saiyan saga.
Vegeta accepts that Goku is better and that he fights for others.

It's Gohan's fault for shielding him. Actually, Gohan could have simply fired a Kiai to blow Vegeeta away from Cell's blast, but he stupidly dived in instead, resulting in him being crippled.
