Dragon Ball, by a longshot, largely because talking to people about it on these websites was an external motivator to delve into it.
Other than that, probably Evangelion or Hunter x Hunter (pre Dark Continent).
I agree that stories don’t need any of those things to be good but i still don’t think dragon ball is the best.
you can make a case for the fight choreography. As shounen jump goes, it’s very very good.
The CSM movie is very good but, like most battle shounen arcs adapted into movie format, I think it just works better in manga format. Still, the first half (i.e. the part before the continuous action scenes that are strung together) is directed very well, and the arguably ill-suited format...
It’s not an unreasonable criticism. It’s also not a bad thing per se, most directors revisit a lot of the same themes and plot elements, including the most acclaimed ones like Miyazaki and so on. I do personally think that his last three movies have been way too similar to each other though...
Madoka’s got some subversive elements, but “magical girl, but dark/becomes corrupted/etc” isn’t uncommon in the genre either, like in Sailor Moon for example.
I’d have to watch his stuff again (it’s been like 10 years) but I think Urobuchi’s stuff generally ended on a hopeful or positive note...
Yeah and they're just normiecore enough for people to go ooh aah
Ohhh look it's magical girls but dark, also look at how their wishes create despair
Ohhh look it's Fate, I know Saber, also look at them talk philosophy at each other
Ohhh look it's Minority Report, also look at them quote...
Nah
I wouldn't say that he's a poor man's Konaka (that is to say, yes, he's different enough), but I do think he's overall a lesser storyteller in terms of conveying his themes in a natural way. I can see why people would get more attached to his characters and narratives though.
Lain is very good, it's aged like wine, although there's one puzzling aspect I wrote off as a red herring back then and never really figured out.
Chainsaw is good, I saw the movie a few days ago. I just wish the OST during action sequences was better.
These are everywhere in Japan. I mostly didn't buy any because I prefer magnets and keychains, of which they have comparatively less, but yeah they're cool. I might have one or two but I don't recall. Would have to go through my shit.
I think I have a couple of bag tags of Pokemon that are made...
