How do we not have a thread on this film? This is my favorite anime film that I've watched thus far.

Your Name (Japanese: 君の名は。, Hepburn: Kimi no Na wa.) is a 2016 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, produced by CoMix Wave Films, and distributed by Toho. It depicts the story of high school students Taki Tachibana and Mitsuha Miyamizu, who suddenly begin to swap bodies despite having never met, unleashing chaos on each other's lives. The film was inspired by the frequency of natural disasters in Japan.

It's a great movie. I wrote about why I liked it before. It shows youth and as an older person it's nice to see them youthing away, like an old person watching kids play. It brings nostalgia for that time, even for things I never did. The visuals are the best around and it was emotive in ways I don't remember, I'd say even transcendent. Perhaps a feeling of something bigger in the universe, of ancestors and nature. A story of romance that really gives some feeling of the emotion, which is key to understanding the power of romance. The magic of two people who don't directly know each other, yet went so far for each other. Like I said I wrote before, tbh I don't remember it now. It had rewatch value tho.

It’s not an unreasonable criticism. It’s also not a bad thing per se, most directors revisit a lot of the same themes and plot elements, including the most acclaimed ones like Miyazaki and so on. I do personally think that his last three movies have been way too similar to each other though. Hard to blame him after he struck commercial gold with Your Name, but meh.

The CSM movie is very good but, like most battle shounen arcs adapted into movie format, I think it just works better in manga format. Still, the first half (i.e. the part before the continuous action scenes that are strung together) is directed very well, and the arguably ill-suited format doesn’t drag it down nearly as much as other movies like that last Demon Slayer one.

Like, the first thing that came to mind when I saw that poster was, "Oh, another high school romance anime. They really like making those in Japan, huh? I wonder if the person producing or directing this is a pedophile. Nah, I shouldn't stereotype" and then I saw Kenshi's post 🤣

I'm going to watch Your Name today in order to find out for certain that it's inferior since the film is not fresh in my mind.

The reason as to why Your Name doesn't hit has hard anymore is because I'm not the same individual that I was in 2016... Chainsaw Man has elements that impacts this version of me harder right now.
