What are your biggest gripes with any aspect of anime? Production, presentation, whatever.

In subbed anime, I hate it when the translator refuses to translate a common fuckin' word because the Japanese word "sounds cooler" or some shit. One of the most well known examples being "Translator's note: keikaku means plan".

It gets worse in dubbed anime when you have a reasonably good dub, but they decide to just not translate shit. I don't want them to westernise the show by changing things, I just want them to not be fuckin' weebs about their dubbing. It's super jarring to hear it. Way more so than it is to read it.
It's so easy too.
Do Translate: Nouns
Don't Translate: Proper Nouns

Also not a fan of eyecatches on DVDs/Blu-rays. I like that they include them for the sake of completeness, but why not just put them all in like, special features? This one is a minor gripe though.

This pet peeve of mine isn't too big, because it's pretty common, but when a character feels the need to state the frikking obvious.

"So and so is on their way to school!" As so and so is waiting for a bus.

It happens a lot in slice of life anime, but it definitely happens in action ones too. Where the supporting characters basically give a play by play of the fight.

I noticed this a lot in Beyblade Metal Fusion, but the constant need to say people's names. Like, every fucking sentence begins or ends with a character's name, even if they've been talking to that person the whole time. Maybe it's a dub thing or even a Japanese thing, but I've never heard people named so many goddamn times in my personal experience. I don't say my friend's name every time I address him, nor do I hear anyone else do this. It's just superbly irritating.

Here's a small list.

  • As a dirty dub fan of Dragon Ball, I hate it when people pronounce Goku like Gokoo. I dunno how to write it exactly, but it's with an elongated U sound. Drives me bonkers.

  • Another Dragon Ball thing, I hate it when people abbreviate Resurrection 'F' as "FnF", but then they go and abbreviate Battle of Gods as "BoG". Like, if you prefer the Japanese names, cool. But fuckin' stick to one thing, man. Don't go being all inconsistent.

  • Also related, I hate it when people abbreviate Super Saiyan as SSJ, when they don't say Supa Saiya-jin out loud.

  • I hate it when fans call characters by their Japanese name when their Japanese name is a western word. Biggest example is people that refuse to call Light (Yagami) "Light", and call him "Raito". Bitch, Raito IS Light.

I hate this too. As an extension of this, I also hate (but to a lesser extent) when a character feels the need to explain something that's obvious to everyone that's there, even if it's not obvious to the audience. Like, I get that they're doing it for the audience's benefit, but in-universe it makes no sense for them to be saying that because they're either alone and don't need to elaborate or everyone else there already knows so there's no need to elaborate. Either throw in a character who's clueless like us or just find some other way to tell us.

Some other things:

- The whole violent tsundere thing. It's played for laughs, but sometimes it's just ridiculous. Sometimes a girl legit tries to kill the guy and it's played for laughs. I don't really mind dark humor much, but that's not what this is. It's so out of place.
- Out of place comic relief in general. For example, in Akame ga Kill's (it happens a lot in this show) first episode they immediately go from a guy tragically dying to the main character comically being dragged away by this blonde bimbo who wants him to join her team. <del>Incidentally, AgK fuckin' sucks.</del>
- "Oops I tripped and accidentally groped your tits and pulled down your pants."

I hate these fucking things:

<div class='spoiler_toggle'>Spoiler: click to toggle</div><div class="spoiler" style="display:none;">
Anirage-alternate.svg
</div>I also dislike "pervy antics". To a one, they're cheap, unfunny gag scenes and they make me dislike the character rather than endearing them to me, especially if the subject of the perversion is being made uncomfortable. I understand these are cartoons and stuff, but it's too rapey for my tastes.

- I hate it when an anime builds up a relationship and then the two are about to kiss and it gets interrupted and it doesn't happen.

- I hate when translators try to translate the honorifics. Like they put down "Miss [name]" every time the character is mentioned. That shit is so annoying and even more annoying when they try to translate the more obscure ones like -chan and -kun.

- I hate that explanation thing too. I get it's an information drop but do it in a way that makes sense lol.

悟空 - Gokuu, sorry that's how its pronounced lol.

This shit pisses me off too man. Why write it in the syllabic spelling when its an English word? The Japanese are approximating the English word with their syllables so just fuckin say it in English. Its like if I went around and say Torankusu instead of Trunks.

This is because it is usually pretty rude to use things like "you" in Japanese culture. You use their name instead.

Oh, no, I get that it's pronounced that way. I just don't like it. Growing up with the English dub has warped my opinion of things when it comes to Dragon Ball. I still spell Freeza like "Frieza", Boo like "Buu", and Mr. Satan is "Hercule". And I never say Son Goku. I realise I'm in the wrong... I just can't help it.

Oh then yeah I do the same thing. Its what I grew up with so. It doesn't bother me that its actually pronounced Gokuu though.

That isn't actually inconsistent. Battle of Gods was the official subtitle of the movie provided even within Japanese material of the movie, under the "Kami to Kami" kanji. Fukkatsu no F on the other hand, didn't have the same treatment, with the English title only being provided within FUNimation's liscensing.

Just a few of my problems:

- As already said, when a relationship between characters ends up going nowhere.

- "Oh look, a new villain who's far stronger than the last and wasn't even implied to exist up until now, despite having 100+ episodes worth of material to do so!" This is especially common in Shonen. It can be tolerable, depending how it's done, though less so when their existence and power completely ignore most logic presented in the series (eg. YYH, DBZ, etc.)

- Another common problem being in series where characters can sense an enemy's Ki, know it's far greater than their own, yet still feel a need to run straight at them.

- Series that often consist of a villain sending wave after wave of henchmen to take on a powerful hero, only to have them fail every time. This was somewhat tolerable in Part 3 of JJBA due to the appearance of interesting stands a tactical battles, though less so in series such as the original Cutie Honey or the Devilman anime series.

- Generally the way in which modern protagonists seem to act and look. Most of the time, they tend to be skinny teens who are of barely any use and just sit around crying when things don't go their way (eg. Naruto). Things have certainly changed since the days when protagonists and, casts themselves, were far more visually impressive, usually having the depth and emotional strength to boot.

- When a series tries to get fanservice from characters who look way too young for you to be comfortable with it.

5. They defend Bleach
6. They defend Naruto
7. Pressure me to read Attack On Titan (I already read it, but it's on-hold for real priorities)

I can agree with these to some extent, though the first 3 are highly subjective. If they've given enough time for the series and can form a coherent reason for their critique, then I can tolerate it. It's only with those that form a negative response to them from just the appearance or prologue to the series that grind my gears. OP and Toriko are indeed good examples of this, since with the former I've heard a lot of ignorant responses such as "Hurr durr too long", "Childish art" <del>as opposed to most modern manga/anime?</del>. Toriko hate's even worse, with such dumb responses as "It's about food. That's stupid" or people judging it based on it's poor anime.

When they hate those series, yet love the ones in 4-6, that's even worse.

Again, the ones you mentioned can be defended, the problem is once again, coherent responses. I wouldn't mind someone defending the likes of Fairy Tail or Naruto if they can put up a good front, the problem is, this very rarely happens and is difficult to do with the series current standing, to say the least.
