In the anime when being informed that Freeza and Goku would likely die, Vegeta laughed it off and celebrated as that would make him the strongest. Ofc, it later retconned Vegeta's behavior as if that never happened, but do you think this behavior made sense? Did you enjoy this side of Vegeta more?

In the anime too in the SSj Goku vs Freeza, Vegeta sensed them and tried to help Goku in the fight until being teleported. Even if that was retconned, I liked this attitude. He didn't feel overwhelmed by SSJ Goku and rather took it as a natural course of events, in comparison to his later dumbfoundedness at Goku being a SSJ.

I don't think it's out of character really. He wanted Ginyu and Goku to take each other out after all and I'm sure he would've celebrated if that happened.

Since he didn't see Super Saiyan in the manga (or sense it somehow), it makes sense that he wasn't excited about his death.

I'm fine with both.

The anime seemed to highlight the sadistic and #1 ruler of Vegeta moreso, while I've the impression the manga was already making Vegeta out to be more a competitive battle freak than someone with vile intentions.

I like the vile and opportunistic side of Vegeta he had in the anime, specifically on Namek. He wasn't wrapped up in his pride and took whatever breaks and openings came his way. Much more of a villain and less of an anti-hero, which fits him better at this time, in my opinion.
