Are Saiyans really bad?

Because Toriyama retconned Gokuu's family to be good in Minus. Burdack was an asshole who killed people with no hesitation in the TV special and Toriyama included a scene from it in the original manga, so it was canon. Then, Minus retconned Burdack to be a family man and DBS's manga took it a step further by having him save Granola.

Saiyans were a race of mostly savages in the original manga. And this is still true in DBS; Gine was an outlier and Burdack was retconned to be one as well.
Yeah that’s a vastly superior backstory. The new stuff is dumb. The old Saiyan backstory was raw.

The Saiyan pod was literally sending him messages to destroy Earth, hinting this type of lifestyle is instilled into them during a very young age.

This points to Saiyans being evil due to their culture and environment, rather than by nature.
I'm not doubting this, but was this explicitly stated in the manga? I reread several areas and never found a direct statement saying the pod was sending them messages.

It’s from the anime, I’d have to check the manga lines.

Because thinking about it, how would it communicate to a newborn child? They don't even understand language yet. To me it seemed like they were sent to the planets under the expectation that their natural instincts would take care of things.

This is all anime, but I don’t know why or where, but I heard that the space-pod might brain-wash the babies. Maybe it has something to do with Gohan being more aggressive after seeing it in filler and turning Oozaru (during the training) IIRC.

Hmm, yeah it’s sounding like it’s an anime only thing.

Raditz has the conversation when he initially meets Goku. I’ll check it.

I don't think Bardock was fully retconned until the Granolah Arc. In both Minus and the OVA he cares about his fellow Saiyans but shows it in different ways.

Minus doesn't even fully retcon the event of the OVA (just his meeting with Goku and the visions stuff), and Toyotaro suggested it's still semi canon.

Are they asleep the whole time in the pods? I don't think a baby would survive awake in a pod. It would probably go insane and die.

OG Burdack didn't care about his family. He only cared about his crew because they fought alongside him on the battlefield. Obviously he didn't want his whole race wiped out (most people wouldn't), but we see that he didn't get along with the other Saiyans at the bar.

Minus Burdack clearly loved his wife and kids. He even admits that Gine's softness was rubbing off on him (whereas we didn't even see Gokuu's mom in the TV special. It's pretty much implied that it was just some Saiyan random woman who Burdack had no romantic attraction to). The Granola arc goes right along with this interpretation of Burdack; he was reminded of his own family when he saw Granola and his mom.

The only thing that the new continuity keeps is Burdack confronting Freeza's army in an attempt to stop him from destroying the planet. Everything about his old crew has been retconned away (we see them in DBS Broly, but it's clear that Toei just felt like reusing their designs as cameos. Toriyama probably didn't even remember them); the circumstances behind Burdack's final confrontation with Freeza have changed.
